benedikt frey s arresting out of here was the second entry of our blanc series. originally a vinyl-only limited release, now the track gets a fresh new treatment in the hands of two mainstays of european techno: roman flugel and simon haydo. flugel s cosmic disco drama rework lives up to its name, maintaining the noir disco spirit of the original track but infusing it with tension-building sequences and strings that give it an extra mischievous twist. our favorite frankfurter also straightens the rhythmic skeleton and adds shuffling shakers to make it a relentless dancefloor weapon. haydo s remix delves into a more dismal terrain, transforming the vocals into haunted echoes, adding esoteric synths and topping it all with razor-sharp percussion in what sounds like a storm of ice asteroids falling into a lake of steel. the 12inch comes in a beautiful sleeve featuring an exclusive illustration by barcelona-based artist pau lopez and design by arnau pi.

hot on the heels of “the reason”, released earlier in april, mimi music continues to impress with the death no more ep from label head komplexx. he teams up with former booker of extrema and present-day photographer peter van hal. the original version of “death no more” defies genre boundaries with ease. fusing old school progressive stylings, well placed percussion, an epic choral vocal with a catchy main hook and a rubbery bass line, komplexx has unleashed a summer anthem for the discerning dance-floor worldwide. the remix comes from well respected german artist marcus sur. a producer in his own right, signed to noir music, trapez, highgrade, four:twenty records and many more, sur created a darker more hypnotic journey focusing on the percussive aspects of the original. and komplexx’s v.i.p. mixx heads off into housey techno waters from the start. deeper, more percussive and driving, the v.i.p. mixx keeps the central melody intact while creating a darker feel. this has mass crossover appeal written all over it.

terrific record! eight charged, intimate meditations by julie normal and olivier demeaux, playing a rickety ondes martenot and an old church harmonium. gripping, detailed, stately improvisation — a bit like the ùrlars in classical bagpipe music — which nervily mixes the sternly doom-laden with precarious, other-worldly wonderment. moscow label grow continues in fine creative form, seemingly not sticking to a motive or trend but rather concentrating on the strength of character within the music it releases. for the labels eighth release the artist is berlin based the marx trukker, who over the last 10 years has been developing his very distinct sound and recent output on labels like pluie/noir, the untold stories, and most recently noorden, have all been especially impressive. now on grow comes the 4 track vinyl * heavens crackling*, from the title one is expecting something awesome, and the album does not disappoint, right from the off, the first track: * a time well spent*, begins with celestial tones ringing out and the performance develops with great synth work, enlightened and very enlivening, spring is in step and something is beginning. the record continues at such a level throughout, overflowing with rich tones, warmth, and raw sounding percussion. in the second track, * all the boating still a tide to go*, deep warm bass and strings reverberate, as if amidst a hot harbours summer, then the ethereal synths return as magical breezes of cooling wind on a june day. on the bside comes the title track * heavens crackling*, the tone has cooled, there is an autumnal vibe, extended tones of an eerie but reassuring nature provide the ground, from under which a molten bass flows playfully. the final track, * i do anything but its so cold*, as the title would suggest, again time has passed, gone are the warm relaxed echoes of the the opening tracks, winter has come, and a strong percussive energy becomes the driving force of an especially deep and more introverted last track. in heavens crackling there is an uncanny understanding of time passing and representation of being, its present in the patience and performance within every track, and the effect of the album, which seems, like the seasons, to naturally come full circle, is for the listener indeed to experience a time well spent. top marks for the marx trukker!

the mighty machinegewehr returns with the unforgiven, a four track 12 inch on electronic emergencies. rotterdam s booming disco noir producer is famous for his clean but haunting electronic beats with synth-laden dreamy harmonies. on the unforgiven, this results in two kicking club tracks with clear electro pop pep, an introspective and mesmerizing masterpiece and a perfect bittersweet pop song featuring the breezy and hazy vocals of frosty euro vixen gees voorhees.

hedonism is an ethical theory that pleasure, in a sense of satisfaction of desires, is the highest good and proper aim of human life, and this seems to also be hdnsm’s ultimate musical objective. their first release debuted as a kickstarter of “variant ep” v.a. series, showcasing three very different yet highly contemplative creations from cumsecade, anestie gomez and man spider. hdnsm flips the coin and for the second episode of “variant” series it lands on two very solid, incredibly moody and extensive works from fresh talents shcaa and cleymoore. the ep features two very different tracks yet they share the same minimalistic core. both works are blessed with intricate micro-drum arrangements for those feeling groove hungry whilst still standing tall in the experimental abstract realm pleasing those who crave unusual frequencies. a-side’s “masquée” is one of shcaa’s typical rides between sound and silence and it is hard to find another artist who understands sound gaps between grooves better than shcaa does. with his signature vocals and an incredibly delicious duality between acoustic instrumentalism and electronic slamming, this is a groovy, highly deep, very intelligently arranged piece. the flip-side “nebula”, signed by pluie/noir’s boss cleymoore, is a tip of an iceberg when it comes to the art of stripping down. in an apparently thin canvas of minimal drum arrangements there’s a vast amount of sound frequencies underneath a steady ever-kicking groove, tricking your mind into thinking that you’re hearing less than you actually perceive. nebula is hypnotic and dense but focused and sophisticatedly groovy. like the repetitive vocals you’ll hear throughout the b-side, this v.a. sticks to your mind like an addiction of some sort and pushes hdnsm to a new standard of avant-garde and forward-thinking attitude. as before, this vinyl only release comes in a gorgeous cover featuring a painting from max binski and the number of copies available is limited

the four tracks on his seventh ep stand out as masterful, immersive, very intense and at times eerie pieces of lower-bpm dance music. opener *sun gun* and title-track *two headed beast* follow up on the trails of *journey to the center of the sun* or *marlborol noir*, adding further proof of his ability to constantly deliver memorable synth jams. the b-sides *caverns* and *white lodge* allow him to explore his darker side, adding even more melodic intricacy and dramatic moments to his deep, eerie trademark sound.

catenaccio is finally back with a new definition of groove noir, the final destination of the label. the result (aka benjamin fehr & falko brocksieper) comes with endeavour, a trippy and deep bomb that will blow all floors especially with its groovy bassline and its defined sounds from outer space that will grow together with you. alias of your mind is an more experimental track between distortion and dub, that is put together to a beautiful and sensitized journey . stay dark and clear.

the mysterious duo project overall severity landed on fabrizio lapiana s attic music with an intense three track ep called -helene-, second installment of the new hurricane series. on the first side, in -vario 7288- they make an intricate journey immersed in a dark noir melody with powerful techno rhythms and plenty of alien sounds. -unable to assess- on the b-side turns into a hypnotic-linear sound focused on an obsessive and scientific atmosphere where the loopy drums light the way. an ambient flow closes this work, -emotional harm- is an evocative result of accurate sound design full of bleep, breaks and distorted chords.

rounding off the vinyl series that accompanies themas label-defining strength in numbers compilation, part 4 downsizes from 12 inch to 7 inch to present two distinctive jams that show some of the farthest reaches of the new york imprints sound. laurine frost may be best known as part of the nonconformist house and techno scene of europe through releases on perspectiv, sharingtones and nervmusic, but on this special creation for thema he makes the perfect tribute to the city that gave rise to the label, with a little help from the racy diatribe of amiri baraka on “your house”. by way of a truly special finale for the series, minneapolis maverick dj slip graces the label with an all-too rare appearance, taking an altogether more primal approach on “x7” that channels his years spent conjuring up next level techno for missile, music man and more into a taut and punchy electro excursion infected with tricked out effects and seductive sci-fi noir atmospherics. it’s the perfect example of the freaky fringes thema has comfortably reached to over the course of the last forty releases.

re-issue of a thunder orchestras shall i do it?, a haunting yet beautiful slice of hypnotic proto techno from the vaults of the rich eighties belgian new beat / synth wave / ebm noir scene, originally recorded in 1985 and released on a handful of cassette tapes only. re discovered by walhalla records and included on their underground wave volume 4 compilation in 2014, and now re-mastered and available on 12inch format for the first time ever.
